What the heck is Lifestyle Photography?

If you’ve heard the term “Lifestyle Photography” thrown around but aren’t quite sure what it means, you’re not alone. Many photographers use it to describe their approach, but if you’re not familiar with photography jargon, it can be a bit confusing. I’m here to break it down and help you understand what makes Lifestyle Photography so special!

The Basics: Traditional vs. Documentary Photography

Before we dive into what Lifestyle Photography is, it’s helpful to understand where it fits in relation to other styles. There are two main photography styles that many people are familiar with: Traditional and Documentary.

Traditional Photography is what most people picture when they think of portrait photography. You’ve probably seen or experienced this yourself - posing for a picture in a studio setting, sitting upright in a chair, with your hands neatly placed in your lap, facing the camera with your “best” smile. The Photographer then asks you to adjust your pose slightly, and everything is very controlled. Everyone’s outfits are often matching, and it can feel a bit………stiff. I’ve regularly shot in this style when I first started taking portraits for a studio. To me, this is something I call the “cookie cutter posing”, and this is not my style.

On the flip side, Documentary Photography is all about capturing candid moments as they happen, with absolutely no direction from the photographer. Think of a photojournalistic style, documenting an event or moment as it unfolds in real time. While this style has its merits, it’s not quite what I aim for in my work either.

So, what is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle Photography sits right in between traditional and documentary photography, and its the perfect blend of both. The goal is to create an experience for families that helps them relax, connect , and have fun, all while the photographer captures the essence of their personalities and relationships.

In my lifestyle sessions, I provide just enough guidance to make sure the photos reflect the family’s true connections, without feeling like a rigid photo shoot. I’ll help guide families into positions, but I don’t just leave them there. Instead, I encourage interaction-whether it’s telling the kids to be silly and make each other laugh or prompting the parents to share a loving moment. The goal is to create real, natural moments that feel genuine, not forced.

Movement is Key

One of the most important components of Lifestyle Photography is movement. Unlike traditional, static portraits, I encourage families to move during the session. Why? Because movement helps people feel more at ease and express themselves more naturally. It leads to photographs that are full of emotion, energy, and creativity. Photos that truly reflect who the family is.

Keeping everyone moving also helps with kids, especially little ones who can get bored or restless quickly. Most kids have an attention span of about 30 minutes during a photo shoot, so incorporating movement helps keep them engaged and relaxed, The more natural and fun the session feels, the more everyone enjoys it, and the better the photos turn out.
