When’s the best time of year for outdoor family Photos?
This question comes around every once in a while, and I get it. You’re making an investment with both time and money, and you want to make sure you schedule your session for the best time of the year!
You can have family photos anytime of the year! I only reschedule for inclement weather.
There are three things to consider though
What would you like to be wearing for the photos? If you’re aiming for your photos to be in the fall or winter, you may have to dress in layers. I’m thinking like jackets, long-sleeve shirts, pants. Also, with the summer or spring you’re looking at shorts, skirts, short sleeve-shirts. consider all your options with the aesthetic you’re aiming for. You want to think about the start time of your family session. I exclusively shoot during golden hour, meaning an hour or two before sunset. During the summer, Nashville’s sunset usually occurs between 6pm-7pm. That may be a bit late for your little one(s), but during the fall/winter time sunset is between 4pm-5pm. Don’t worry if that doesn’t work for you either, I can shoot during the morning hours as well if that works better for some. The morning hours doesn’t quite have the same light, but its similar enough still have beautiful lighting for the photos.
Location, Location, Location! Think about how the time of year may also affect the locations your family is interested in. Think about how a lakeside location may be great for the spring/summer, but way too cold for fall/winter. On the other hand, a park may bring out vivid colors during the fall.
Here’s the thing, There isn’t a WRONG answer to a specific time of year for an outdoor photography session.
Sure, there are factors to think about with outfits and setting, but what’s more important is that you get to spend time with your family, goofing around, playing, and loving - connecting in your own unique personalities that I can capture. Don’t try to get too caught up on when, just make sure you have them photographed.
Either way, if you’re still not sure on an ideal location, I’d be happy to help you figure out a perfect location for your family. I have plenty of favorite spots that provide a beautiful setting for your family. I hope to have a session with your family soon!
